2006 Health Care Provider Congress on Childhood Obesity - laying the groundwork for a learning network to improve clinical services

Halting the increase in childhood obesity by 2015 creates a pressing need for action among multiple stakeholders, including health care providers. Toward this end, many local and regional initiatives have been launched in clinical settings throughout the U.S. However, there are few efforts to coordinate these initiatives and to share lessons learned. The purpose of this project is to create policy and practice supports for screening, prevention, and management of childhood obesity while strengthening and reinforcing linkages between health care providers, schools, and communities. The overall goal of this collaborative project is to accelerate improvement and coordination of clinical services to prevent obesity in children. This project will bring together leaders in health care who are developing innovative and promising clinical preventive strategies. A special focus will be on how to link clinical services to schools and other key organizations in communities. The purpose of the congress will be to lay the foundation for the learning network and knowledge management system that will accelerate improvement in clinical components for prevention and treatment of childhood obesity. Project deliverables include an invitational congress in fall 2006, a final report, a monograph and resource guide detailing critical policy levers, recommended tools and interventions for clinical practice, an assessment of current gaps in knowledge and practice, and a plan for an ongoing learning network.
