Planning for a national initiative on providing safe bike routes to schools
There has been both a decline in the number of children walking and biking to school and an alarming rise in childhood obesity rates over the last 20 years. In response, Congress recently authorized a new Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program to encourage children to walk and bike to school. State departments of transportation anticipate over $600 million over the next five years to create SRTS programs. This grant will enable the League of American Bicyclists to influence the scope, uptake, and effectiveness of this new program. Deliverables will include a meeting, launch of an awareness campaign, and a training session for 50 state coordinators for the SRTS programs.
