There has been both a decline in the number of children walking and biking to school and an alarming rise in childhood obesity rates over the last 20 years. In response, Congress recently authorized a new Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program to encourage children to walk and bike to school. State departments of transportation anticipate over $600 million over the next five years to create SRTS programs.
