The purpose of this project is to apply lessons learned from high-risk industries, including aviation and nuclear power, to health care organizations to improve the reliability and safety of system performance. The project will pilot the use of simulation training for hospital surveyors to help them recognize system vulnerabilities that underlie sentinel events. The training will be the focus of the January 2006 annual surveyor training conference conducted by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Project deliverables will include training videos, guides for facilitators, and training manuals. This effort represents the first step by JCAHO in using simulation and will be considered successful if JCAHO increases its future investment in this approach to enhancing the survey process.
