National survey of current physician screening and referral practices for childhood obesity

Parent surveys consistently report the need to engage doctors and other health care providers in screening children for overweight and obesity as an important prevention and treatment strategy, yet there are no national surveys on childhood obesity screening and referral practices of primary care doctors. The purpose of this collaborative project is to develop a representative, national survey of current physician screening and referral practices in partnership with key organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the National Initiative for Childrens Healthcare Quality. One aspect of the Foundation's Childhood Obesity strategy is to provide supports, tools, and resources for health care providers. This national survey will provide baseline date on current screening, referral practices, and information on barriers and facilitators to providing better care for children and their parents. The survey should help link health care providers to school- and community-based BMI screening programs. Deliverables for the project include the development of a valid survey tool, the survey data and report, and several publications based on the survey findings.
