Teachers' kit to initiate a nutrition and running program for children

The need to provide fitness-related programming to children is more important than ever as childhood obesity rates continue to rise unabated. Massive cultural shifts, including a transformation from active to sedentary recreation and reductions in school-based physical education programming, have more than doubled the percentage of America's overweight and obese children, resulting in profound societal and economic consequences. To address this crisis, the New York Road Runners Foundation has developed Running Partners, a model school day and after school running program. The program includes fitness and interactive nutrition instruction and a host of collateral activities to promote character and academic development. The program currently serves 5,000 children from low-income neighborhoods weekly in almost 100 New York City public schools and community centers. This grant provides support for the development and distribution of Running Partners in a Box, a kit of materials that will enable classroom teachers to institute the program in their schools. The materials will cover the school day and after school programs separately and will also include information on the other components of the program. Because the running programs can be initiated in nontraditional physical activity settings (hallways, classrooms) and can be led by classroom teachers throughout the day, the program is a model approach to overcoming many of the barriers to children obtaining recommended amounts of physical activity in school. This project meets the Foundation's Childhood Obesity objective of supporting innovative approaches to physical activity in school and after school settings.
