The Foundation's program interests on nurses focus on increasing the retention of nurses in hospital settings by improving the work environment. Eighty-eight percent of new nurses start their careers in hospitals. There is evidence based on anecdotal or small-scale studies that these nurses have the highest turnover rates. The reasons for these early career choices are not clear, and to improve the work environment for nurses we need better information about when and why new nurses leave. The purpose of this collaborative project is to track a nationally representative sample of newly licensed nurses over the first three to four years of their careers. A successful project would inform the Foundation's staff focusing on nurses, hospital administrators, and policy makers on why new nurses are changing jobs and where they go when they leave. A series of planned papers and publications will promote dissemination of findings and the spread of the new information about nurse retention.
