Expansion of SkillWorks: Partners for a productive workforce
In Boston, community health workers tend to have high turnover, low wages (a mean salary of $23,000), lack of formal career ladders, and a desire for additional training. SkillWorks is a unique employment development project in Massachusetts. Current partners include the City of Boston, local and national foundations, community organizations, employers, and the State's workforce development department. The purpose of this collaborative project is to expand SkillWorks to focus on advancing the low-wage workforce in these sectors through: (1) a collaborative planning process (including a customized Request for Proposals); (2) funding of a new workforce partnership that brings together a consortium of employers, workers, training providers, and other stakeholders in the community/public and/or behavioral health sectors; and (3) an evaluation that includes a return on investment analysis. This project aligns directly with the Foundation's goal of developing a strong, capable, and diverse health and health care workforce as necessary to improve the health and health care of all Americans.
