Statewide survey to explore the impact of nurse staffing levels and work environment on patient outcomes
A critical nursing shortage and rising public health concerns regarding patient safety are prompting state and national policymakers to consider a variety of initiatives to enhance nurse retention and improve the quality of patient care. This grant project would add New Jersey licensed registered nurses to a federally funded comprehensive study of patient care and nurse outcomes in health settings being conducted in Pennsylvania and California to evaluate the adequacy of the nurse work environment and its impact on nurse and patient outcomes. The project will be considered successful if the study and its research serve to: (1) evaluate the adequacy of the nurse work environment in New Jersey hospitals, home care, and long-term care facilities; (2) explore relationships among work environment, staffing levels, care processes, and in-patient outcomes; and (3) provide evidence for policy making.
