Improving strategic effectiveness for state public health agencies

Enhancing the leadership capacity of state health officials is critical to improving the effectiveness and impact of public health. The purpose of this project is to establish a peer consultative service for state and local public health agency leaders focused on developing and implementing strategic effectiveness initiatives. This process develops the capacity for leaders to communicate their vision clearly to policy makers, staff, and the public, and provides a tool for accountability. The project grew out of the experience with the State Health Leadership Initiative national program and is consistent with the Foundation staff's strategy to enhance public health leaders' abilities to improve agency performance by increasing the skills of leaders and providing new tools to aid leadership. Deliverables will include: (1) recruitment, selection, training, and certification of a cadre of former senior state health officials (SHOs) and deputy directors in a proven process for increasing strategic effectiveness; (2) consultation on strategy formulation and implementation provided to as many as six current SHOs; and (3) a self-sustaining peer consulting service for state and local public health agencies by the end of the grant period.
