The Foundation's initiative, Healthy Eating by Design, seeks to affect favorably the food environment for school-aged youth and their families. This programmatic effort is part of a much larger effort to identify an integrated set of initiatives that address policy and environmental solutions, communications strategies and tactics, and school and/or community-based partnerships that will increase access to healthy food choices. The grantee will assess the current food environment in its target area and conduct a process evaluation documenting the successes of and lessons learned from its 18-month initiative. The Albuquerque Alliance for Active Living will create a subcommittee of Healthy Eating by Design (HED) with Valle Vista Elementary School, Albuquerque Public Schools' Food Services and Nutrition Department (APS), and Farm to Table/Farm to School. The HED team will develop an assessment process that will examine the current food intake situation at Valle Vista School, provide fresh fruit during the school's snack-times, sponsor field trips to farms and other "healthy food" sites, and promote healthy eating in the home. The team will then develop a new snack policy for the APS district's draft Wellness Policy and support passage of the entire policy, and recommend how to integrate "Fresh Snacks" at Valle Vista and other schools.
