Understanding the role of evidence-based medicine and benefit design in doctor-patient decision making

The Dr. A. J. Kauvar Foundation and other health care stakeholders in Colorado are exploring how health benefits can be designed to encourage greater use of evidence-based medicine in physician-patient decision making, including financial incentives for patients and physicians. The purpose of this project is for the Kauvar Foundation to review the evidence about how patients and physicians use information to make treatment decisions, and the barriers to using evidence, financial incentives, and cost-sharing as opposed to other factors. It will also conduct some simulation testing of how physicians and patients could discuss and make treatment decisions under an evidence-based benefit package for several model diagnoses. A national advisory group will guide the project. The project will be considered successful if it results in a completed study published in a peer-reviewed journal.
