Paths to Recovery: Changing the Process of Care for Substance Abuse Programs

The Foundation's initiative, Paths to Recovery: Changing the Process of Care for Substance Abuse Programs, was designed to strengthen the addiction treatment system's ability to successfully use process improvement techniques toward increasing patients' access to and retention in addiction treatment programs. This grant provides support to Stanley Street Treatment and Resources (SSTAR) for: (1) increasing the percentage of clients who participate in a meaningful treatment episode following initial request; and (2) increasing the capacity of SSTAR to utilize process improvement techniques in improving services. Forty-seven percent of clients from the grantee's inpatient programs who initially request admission do not wait long enough to get an intake appointment. Of those who get an intake appointment, 36 percent do not show up for the intake. Of those admitted, between 20 and 45 percent leave in fewer than three days. The purpose of this project is to improve these processes.
