The Texas Department of Agriculture implemented a new state policy on foods in public schools for the 2004-2005 school year. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the impact of the statewide policy by documenting students' selection of the National School Lunch Program, snack bar, and vending foods before and after the new law takes effect. Most Texas school districts record children's food selections and maintain them electronically by location, date, and time. Previous work demonstrated high accuracy of the recorded information. The project will be considered successful if it prepares the way for rigorous time series analysis. The project will seek funding partners in Texas and elsewhere. The deliverable will be a report on progress and a proposal to be shared with the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other funders.
