Developing a blueprint for exemplary learning sites in clinical academic training

With a growing emphasis on quality of care and team-based care, academic and clinical training needs to be redesigned and partnerships between medical residency programs and managed care settings are needed to develop new ways to teach the skills and competencies of primary care. The purpose of this project is to develop ways to incorporate the clinical microsystem approach to integrate quality and performance measurement into residency training, as well as medical and nursing school curricula. This project will be a planning phase of a multiphase project. Specifically, it will develop a comprehensive blueprint for clinical and educational interventions in medical schools across the U.S. The blueprint development will involve a working group of four to five medical schools from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Collaborative that will develop a conceptual model for change and an inventory of potential barriers to change. In addition, professional organization partners will be recruited, and a defined plan for formative and summative evaluation of possible pilot projects developed in the next phase of the overall activity. Success of this planning phase will be the development of a feasible model of exemplary learning sites that will facilitate exemplary patient care and exemplary profession formation/development across academic clinical microsystems.
