This grant supports a series of health fair events in Harlem, New York, to encourage local residents to act upon critical health issues affecting the quality of their lives. Asthma, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, heart disease, infant mortality, and cancer are of concern to Harlem's residents. This project, Health Time at the Apollo, is a collaborative effort initiated by The Apollo Theater Foundation in partnership with Affinity Health Plan and North General Hospital. Project activities consist of three free outdoor fairs that will include health screenings, access to health professionals and information, workshops, and demonstrations. Each event will focus on a target audience and highlight a specific health problem relevant to that group. Key strategies for this project include using the Apollo name, its central location, and staged entertainment and celebrities to attract and engage area residents. Health Time at the Apollo will be considered successful if it: (1) secures media partners, community representatives, and celebrities to speak about and raise the visibility of prevalent health issues; (2) attracts at least 1,000 residents to each event and encourages a majority of them to take advantage of one or more free health screenings; and (3) fosters a connection among multiple health and social service organizations and the targeted population groups.
