The Foundation's program, Transforming Care at the Bedside, was designed to develop new interventions to improve the hospital work environment with the goal of improving the quality of care provided by nurses at the bedside. The Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCB) program is in the early stages of developing new interventions to improve the hospital work environment. The purpose of this particular grant project is to evaluate the pilot phase of this program. The goal of this evaluation is to provide both outcome and process information on Phase II of TCB in order to inform the planning of the demonstration phase. The main activities of this project will be to: (1) use data collected from participating sites to measure improvement in quality-of-care outcomes that are sensitive to nursing service; (2) provide a qualitative exploration of the facilitators and barriers to achieving change and testing TCB innovations; and (3) do in-depth case studies at a limited number of sites to explore the role that an institution's culture and/or leadership will play in the creation and dissemination of innovations. This project will be considered successful if the deliverables inform the work of the Foundation's Nursing Team as the TCB moves into its demonstration phase.
