Developing a valid survey and assessment of food marketing in schools

Childhood obesity has doubled in young children and tripled among adolescents in the past 25 years. While the exact causes of this epidemic are unclear, many states and communities are considering policy regulations related to the marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages in schools. Currently, no valid survey instrument exists for assessing marketing of snacks, soft drinks, and other foods in schools, and no in-depth national survey has been conducted of these marketing practices. The purpose of this project is the development of a valid survey instrument and a national survey of food marketing practices in 700 schools. This project will be considered successful if an in-depth and valid survey instrument can be developed, and if a national survey of a representative sample of schools can be conducted. An additional measure of success will be the development of an action plan with future partners (e.g., Project LEAN, the Action for Healthy Kids Coalition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and others) who will conduct future national, state, or local surveys using this assessment tool. The Consumers Union will be a co-sponsor.
