Developing a school- and community-based intervention to prevent and reduce obesity among fourth through eighth grade students

The purpose of this project is to prevent and decrease obesity among children in three economically disadvantaged, urban communities. The project will focus on two areas--an assessment of foods that are available and sold to children in corner grocery stores, and the development and evaluation of a media campaign to increase consumption of healthy foods and physical activity in those neighborhoods. The primary deliverable for this project will be a social marketing campaign to promote healthy eating and physical activity in the proposed communities. This project will be considered successful if it shows: (1) decreases in the prevalence of overweight; (2) decreases in consumption of high-fat foods and sugared soft drinks; (3) increases in consumption of fruits and vegetables; (4) reduction in television viewing; and (5) increases in moderate activity among participants.
