The Foundation's Investigator Awards in Health Policy Research Program was designed to produce major works from senior and new investigators that would add to the health policy field's knowledge base.Recent reports by the Surgeon General, the Institute of Medicine, and the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health indicate that substantial racial and ethnic disparities exist in access to mental health care. Therefore, one of the most important policy issues facing the U.S. mental health care system is how to explain and eventually reduce racial and ethnic differences in access and utilization of mental health care among minorities with serious emotional problems and/or mental disorders. Using data from the National Survey of American Life, the purpose of this project is to explore the policy implications of community psychiatric epidemiologic research on racial disparities. Upon completion, a book will be prepared that will integrate, synthesize, and expand upon the new knowledge produced by the analyses and findings from this study.
