Although the existence of racial and ethnic disparities in health care has been extensively documented in numerous research studies, no systematic reviews of the available research have been conducted to determine: (1) which clinical conditions tend to show the most marked racial and ethnic disparities in treatment; or (2) how to assess racial and ethnic disparities in care in terms of the potential impact on minority health outcomes. The purpose of this project is to estimate the impacts of disparities on minority population health. This study will help define the problem by documenting some of the potential consequences of disparities. The project will result in a series of papers in peer-reviewed publications and presentations of findings at national conferences. This project will be considered successful if it results in focusing future research on disparities that have the greatest impact, and if it provides opportunities to explore etiologies for disparities and develop interventions designed to eliminate disparities in the most critical areas.
