Adolescent substance use and abuse are correlated with other serious destructive behaviors. This grant supports a conference of leading residential treatment providers and concerned national associations to identify the best practices for the treatment of emotionally disturbed and substance-abusing youth. The project will be considered successful if: (1) the conference leads to the production of a database consisting of a national sample of outcomes of children in residential care, the treatment services offered, and the best practices available to them; (2) a monograph of the conference proceedings is produced; and (3) this information is disseminated nationally through articles in practitioner journals and presentations. The conference will be organized by Bonnie Brae, a nonprofit residential treatment and special education center for emotionally disturbed adolescent boys, with the support of the Child Welfare League of America.
