The Foundation's program, Injury Free Coalition for Kids: Dissemination of a Model Injury Prevention Program for Children and Adolescents, was designed to reduce and prevent injuries to children through a hospital-based, research-driven model, implemented in partnership with coalitions of community stakeholders. This grant provides support for programs currently under way to decrease injury among Jacksonville's children. These programs include: (1) a comprehensive bicycle safety education program stressing the importance of helmet acceptance by children, ensuring the availability of low-cost or no-cost helmets and police enforcement of the Florida Bicycle Helmet Law; (2) initiating and implementing education and community involvement with law enforcement efforts to target populations with safe driving and riding practices addressing seat belt usage, and appropriate child restraint use; (3) education about driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol; and (4) a school site design analysis and neighborhood site assessment to determine the conditions of street traffic, parent and bus drop-off locations, sidewalks, crossings, and the overall safety of existing routes to school. The results will direct a list of planned improvements to enhance the potential for safe walking or riding to and from school.
