Implications of Crossing the Quality Chasm report for the treatment of mental and addictive disorders

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, "Crossing the Quality Chasm," has sparked several national activities to increase quality of health care. The report, however, did not address the special issues of quality of care for mental and addictive disorders. The purpose of this project is for the IOM to convene an expert committee to explore the implications of the Chasm report for the treatment of mental and addictive disorders and develop an agenda for change. The committee will meet three times, commission three papers on the topic, hold a two-day workshop, and issue a final report containing an Agenda for Change Statement by the committee, synthesis of workshop results, and commissioned papers. The project will be considered successful if a report is completed that clearly demonstrates how the principles, aims, and redesign rules of the Chasm report can be applied to improve the quality of care for addictive and mental disorders.
