The United States has an unprecedented and growing shortage of nurses, particularly in its hospitals. This shortage is a symptom of serious underlying problems: nursing's lack of status among prospective college applicants; a high turnover rate among certified and practicing nurses; severe underrepresentation among men and people of color; practice and education models that are no longer suitable; inadequate application of technology to nursing practice; projected shortfalls in the number of nursing educators; and gaps in public funding of nursing practice and workforce development. If these problems are not addressed systematically, care at the bedside will be severely compromised. This contract supports Spann Publications Consulting in its effort to develop and disseminate two eight-page policy briefs to educate state policy leaders and others about the full extent of the nursing shortage crisis and its underlying problems.
