Collaboration for paraprofessional training, literacy, and job success
The Foundation's program, New Jersey Health Initiatives, was designed to support innovative community-based projects that address one or more of the Foundation's goals in health and health care.The Somerset County Training Consortium was formed to address the shortage of health care paraprofessionals. The consortium consists of all four home health providers in Somerset County, as well as a long-term care agency. Both long-term care and home health aides may be trained within the same curriculum. The purpose of this project was for each agency to recruit and sponsor individuals for the joint training, teach an equal portion of the curriculum, and be involved with the clinical practicum. The project will overcome language barriers by partnering with another local agency--the Jointure-for English as a second language (ESL) training. The partner agencies will cross-train ESL and health care instructors in the unlicensed assistive personnel curriculum and ESL. The Jointure will rewrite the curriculum to simplify language, add more visuals, and include hands-on learning activities in all phases of instruction.
