Chinese power against tobacco

The Foundation's initiative, Policy Advocacy on Tobacco and Health: An Initiative to Build Capacity in Communities of Color for Tobacco Policy Change, was designed to provide resources for community-based organizations and tribal groups interested in implementing effective tobacco prevention and cessation policy initiatives.The purpose of this project is for the Chinese Progressive Association (CPA) to conduct a grassroots policy advocacy campaign to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke among low-income Chinese immigrant tenants in San Francisco. The campaign will support tenants in establishing local smoke free housing policies for residential hotels and high-density apartment buildings in San Francisco's Chinatown. Low-income Chinese immigrants will be engaged in policy advocacy efforts directed at citywide policies to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke in multi-family dwellings. The campaign will draw upon CPA's significant expertise in tobacco control as well as community and tenant organizing, and the unique community assets of San Francisco's Chinatown neighborhood. The campaign will serve as a model for grassroots policy advocacy in other super-urban, low-income immigrant/people-of-color communities.
