Reclaiming Futures: Communities Helping Teens Overcome Drugs, Alcohol and Crime: Seattle-King County, Wash.

The Foundation's initiative, Reclaiming Futures: Communities Helping Teens Overcome Drugs, Alcohol & Crime, was designed to build community solutions to substance abuse and delinquency by developing the systems infrastructure necessary to deliver comprehensive care within the juvenile justice system.The current King County juvenile justice and youth treatment systems lack the ability to provide a continuum of strength-based assessment, treatment, and long-term supports for their substance-abusing youthful offenders. This problem is exacerbated when these children have a co-occurring mental health problem because there is no blended assessment process or an integrated system of care. Categorical funding across multiple branches of government and numerous jurisdictions prevents King County from maximizing both current and future resources available for youthful offenders. The purpose of this project is to: (1) design and implement an effective continuum of assessment, treatment, and supports for substance-abusing youth coming through the court system; (2) provide supports for substance-abusing youth and youth with co-occurring disorders beyond their court and treatment system participation; (3) redirect and invest both current and future funding for these youth based upon their needs; and (4) provide research-based and community-driven services that ensure individualized, comprehensive, long-term relationships.
