Nearly half of America's youth ages 12-21 are not vigorously active on a regular basis, and rates of overweight and obesity in youth have reached unprecedented levels. Sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and related health problems (pediatric Type II diabetes) are especially pronounced in adolescent girls. This grant will support activities to raise awareness of the need for environmental and policy opportunities to foster active living among 12,000 Girl Scouts ages 15-17 and 4,500 Girl Scout volunteers in mid-central New Jersey through promotional events, publications, and Girl Scout-led, community-based projects (e.g., Walk Your Kids to School events). The project will be considered successful if it leads to the creation of a national Girl Scout Active Living Badge to reach the 3.8 million Girl Scouts nationwide, enabling them to become informed advocates for age-appropriate activities to create more activity-friendly schools, communities, and social environments.
