Conducting research on obesity and children

The number of overweight children and youth has more than doubled over the past 20 years. Estimates of societal costs of childhood overweight or obesity are scant. There is growing recognition that the public health community needs to be engaged in the consideration of how best to prevent overweight. Approaches should encompass joint policy and environmental approaches, as well as individual behavioral and biomedical perspectives. In response to this problem, the Institute of Medicine has put together a study committee, Action Plan to Prevent Obesity in Children and Youth. This grant provides support for staffing to complete three background papers and to conduct a workshop addressing environmental and community aspects of obesity. This project will be considered successful if it results in the papers and workshop and these contribute to the development of an action plan and research agenda.
