The suburban sprawl pattern of development that New Jersey has experienced in the last 50 years does not encourage people to walk. These environmental conditions and the problems associated with high vehicular use (e.g., air and noise pollution) pose serious health threats. This grant supports the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions in launching a comprehensive program to train and inform environmental health commissioners from 300 jurisdictions and offices about the measures and benefits for making their communities more walkable and bikeable (e.g., walking trails and greenways, mixed-use zoning, pedestrian links between neighborhoods, and traffic-calming measures). A direct measure of success will be how many communities implement programs and policies to make their communities more pedestrian-friendly and elevate attention to the importance of the built environment in encouraging physical activity.
