Developing consensus policies on community reentry from the criminal justice system, particularly for offenders with physical and mental health issues

The purpose of this project is to develop consensus policies on community re-entry from the criminal justice system, particularly for offenders with physical and mental health issues. It includes partial support of the Re-Entry Policy Council, which is addressing this problem by convening the various stakeholders to develop bipartisan policies and principles to guide states and to facilitate coordination and information sharing among entities implementing policies regarding re-entering offenders. The Re-Entry Policy Council has established three teams, one of which is the Supportive Health and Housing Team. Also included in this project is partial support for a survey of foundation grants to projects targeting health and housing issues for people with criminal records. Deliverables will include comprehensive reports with consensus recommendations for appropriate policies and dissemination of the recommendations through a variety of media and forums. This project will be considered successful if it results in improved policies in states regarding people re-entering communities from the criminal justice system, especially those with infectious diseases, substance abuse problems, and mental health problems.
