Although more than 70 percent of adult smokers state they would like to quit smoking, only a small percentage are successful in doing so each year. Research studies have demonstrated that counseling by health professionals can have a significant impact on smokers' attempting to quit and succeeding in quitting. In order to increase the number of smokers who quit, it is important to encourage more health professionals to counsel their patients who smoke. This contract supports surveys of members of several health professional organizations to determine their knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about smoking and smoking cessation. The findings will inform the work of several of the Foundation's programs that are working to increase the number of health care providers who assist their patients to quit smoking and will be used to inform future program efforts. Deliverables include receipt of an analyzable dataset from each survey completed, codebooks, and detailed methods. The project will be considered successful if it provides information that can be used to inform RWJF's grant making in this area.
