The National Blueprint for Promoting Physical Activity Among Adults Age 50 and Older was developed to serve as a guide for multiple organizations, associations, and agencies, and to inform and support their planning work related to increasing physical activity among America's aging population. The Foundation funded the Blueprint Implementation Project in 2001 in order to assist organizations in addressing barriers to physical activity for people age 50 and older. The Blueprint also includes recommendations on potential strategies for overcoming these barriers. The purpose of this project is to extend the work of the Blueprint Implementation Project by providing small grants to 19 community-based organizations to address barriers identified in the Blueprint that are most relevant to their work. Small grants will be available in two areas: (1) support for local community efforts to deliver physical activity interventions for adults age 50 and older that target diverse populations, especially programs that reflect an intergenerational approach; and (2) support for new partnerships and collaborations among two or more of the organizations to help implement and advance the Blueprint. If successful, the 19 community-based projects will reduce barriers of physical activity for adults age 50 and older.
