New Jersey Mayors' Institute on Community Design conferences

Regular physical activity contributes to a healthy lifestyle, prevents chronic disease, and prevents obesity. The purpose of this project is for the Regional Planning Association (RPA) to conduct two New Jersey Mayors' Institute on Community Design conferences. The mayors present case studies of urban design problems and receive advice, individually and collectively, from the panel of experts on how to make their communities more livable, walkable, and successful places. The conferences give mayors credible and expert advice which helps mayors in their discussions with developers and the general public about project designs to encourage smart growth and protect public health. The National Endowment for the Arts ($10,000), the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs ($50,000), and the New Jersey State League of Municipalities ($5,000) are providing a total of $65,000. Princeton University School of Architecture will host the activities. This grant provides support for making physical activity a central element of the conferences, helping the mayors prepare case studies for presentation and providing follow-up technical assistance to help mayors implement their projects. The project will be considered successful after two conferences are conducted and 16 mayors get help in planning activity-friendly projects. A high-quality publication to inform the public about the health benefits of physical activity and its relationship with the built environment will be produced. This project will help inform the design of a comprehensive program to increase walking and biking in New Jersey. Established in 1922, RPA is the nation's oldest independent planning and advocacy group. It works to improve the quality of life in the 31-county New York-New Jersey-Connecticut metropolitan area, takes positions on major public policy issues, and works on a nonpartisan basis with public- and private-sector interests to advance the region's agenda.
