The Foundation's Local Initiative Funding Partners Program is a matching grants program designed to establish partnerships between the RWJF and local grant makers in support of innovative, community-based projects that improve health and health care for underserved and vulnerable populations.Bringing high technology to little people, the purpose of this telehealth project is to connect children in inner-city childcare centers with a hospital pediatrician or nurse practitioner for consults regarding immediate health concerns. Projected outcomes include reductions in time before a sick child is seen for care, less use of the emergency room for late night diagnosis of childhood illnesses, increased awareness of health issues at the childcare center, and less work time lost by parents. In a three-center pilot study, children missed fewer days due to illness, parent satisfaction was over 90 percent positive, and the program was used to diagnose behavioral concerns.
