The Foundation's Innovators Combating Substance Abuse program was designed to highlight substance abuse as the nation's number one health problem by recognizing those who are striving to bring creative solutions to the field of substance abuse. The purpose of this project is to develop the public policy capacity and effectiveness of the alcohol and drug field and the newly emerging recovery community with its allies. Education and skill building will improve the ability of the field to speak with one voice in advocating for any number of potential policies. Historically, divisions between and among groups and sub-groups have predominated. Treatment and prevention are partnering and alcohol and drug field representatives are transcending old barriers to seek common goals. The field comprised of providers, planners, researchers, and the recovery community can adopt a common agenda through a series of meetings for this purpose, an effort never before attempted. A series of continuous updates and briefing papers will help each group to get "on the same page" and to achieve a blueprint with common elements and objectives of their own design.
