The Foundation's initiative, Prescription for Health: Promoting Healthy Behaviors in Primary Care Research Networks, was designed to develop, field test, and disseminate innovative and feasible interventions for primary-care based health behavior change counseling. The Promoting Healthy Behaviors initiative, to be co-funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, aims to increase the amount of intervention to assist patients in adopting healthier lifestyles. Innovations within primary care to achieve this goal may range from the development of new interventions to systems changes that make possible adoption of proven approaches. Grants of up to $125,000 will be given to primary care practice-based research networks, followed by two or three larger controlled studies of especially promising innovations. This project will plan for a multi-method, interactive evaluation of the initiative. Project deliverables will consist of a plan to collect both qualitative and quantitative information to assess the value of the initiative overall, and to detect and study the promising innovations. This project will be considered successful if a workable plan for evaluation is provided.
