The mission of New York City's Tobacco Control Program is to improve the health of all New Yorkers by promoting social change and creating an environment that reinforces nonsmoking behaviors and supports healthy lifestyles. Although exempt from city tobacco regulations, the United Nations (UN), one of the City's largest employers, has identified health promotion and disease prevention, including smoking cessation, as one of its highest priorities. Unfortunately, there is persistently poor enforcement of smoke-free workplace policies. This grant supports the collaboration between the New York City Department of Health and the UN in developing a work site health promotion program. They will: (1) conduct a comprehensive needs assessment and develop an operations plan; (2) create a senior-level health committee to oversee implementation of programs to promote smoking cessation, physical activity, healthy diet, and stress reduction; (3) implement policy changes that decrease exposure to secondhand smoke and increase access to smoking cessation services; (4) improve enforcement of existing smoke-free policies; and (5) implement best practices in treatment of tobacco use and dependence. The grantee will co-fund this project.
