Studying the effects of family support on diabetes patient self-management

Many health experts believe that family involvement in health care interventions makes a difference. Unfortunately, the evidence base to support this belief is quite meager. This grant supports a randomized study of the effects of family involvement in a diabetes self-management program on a total of 320 patients including controls. Information from this project will advance research in this area and will inform teaching and clinical care practice in primary care settings. The project will be considered successful if it informs faculty and clinicians as to the effects of family involvement in health care interventions designed to improve patient self-management skills. Findings will be disseminated through publications and presentations at professional meetings.
