Bicycling is an enormous untapped resource for increasing physical activity levels and creating active living environments. Over 9 million Americans use their bikes for transportation, and 20 percent of adults say they would bike to work if workplace incentives or facilities were available. This grant provides support for a bicycle-friendly community campaign to encourage physical redesign within communities to encourage and accommodate cycling. The project will engage local League of American Wheelmen membership (bike clubs) to partner with municipalities and metropolitan planning organizations to apply for and achieve the Bicycle-Friendly Community Designation awarded by the League of American Bicyclists. This project will be considered successful if at least 100 new communities receive this designation.
