This project is a one-time contribution to a philanthropic consortium that will mount a concerted pilot demonstration effort to prevent the transmission of HIV from infected mothers to their neonates in selected regions of sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, approximately 40 percent of pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with HIV. The purpose of this project is to provide highly active antiretroviral therapy to women and infants through established antenatal clinics.
