Conducting research on state-level lobbying expenditures and campaign contributions by the tobacco industry

The tobacco industry has a history of using its resources to influence tobacco policy at the federal level and may be shifting its focus to the states. Since 1995, tobacco interests have given more than $32 million in donations to political parties and state and federal candidates. To date, most of the reported giving, $26.7 million, has been used to influence federal elections and office holders. This grant supports the collection, analysis, and publication of state-level data on the tobacco industry's expenditures and its attempts to influence state-level tobacco policy. The results from this project will be compiled into state reports and disseminated widely to researchers, legislators, schools of public health and public policy, interested organizations, and media outlets. This project will be considered successful if the grantee produces and disseminates high-quality reports that fairly and accurately document tobacco industry attempts to influence the public debate over policy at the state level. As a result of this work, policy-makers and the public will have a better understanding of the role that tobacco industry expenditures have played in the tobacco control policy debate.
