Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) program: National effort to attract young scholars to careers in public health (Round 1)

This project seeks to attract talented and creative students to careers dedicated to improving the health of the public, while simultaneously raising the general level of awareness about factors important to health. The major health advances of this past century--such as those against polio, lung cancer, and heart disease--have come from studies and interventions targeted to large segments of the population. Many of the risk factors and opportunities for control were identified through the application of epidemiology, the basic science of population health. Patterned after the well established and prestigious Westinghouse and Intel science prizes, the purpose of this project is to develop and establish a national high school scholarship award program that would focus on the application of epidemiologic methods to current health issues. The student award program would be coupled with teacher awards to recognize outstanding contributions to curriculum or mentoring.
