The adoption of clean indoor air ordinances at the local level are often impacted by tobacco industry efforts. There is evidence that the tobacco industry works to confuse local restaurant owners and associations about the impact that these ordinances have on their businesses. Local business owners are a powerful voice in their communities, and their lack of support for these ordinances can negatively impact their adoption. This grant supports efforts to educate independent restaurateurs about the hazards of secondhand smoke to their employees and patrons based on scientific evidence.
