Determining the best use of technology to educate African-American women about breastfeeding

Despite the fact that there is an abundance of medical evidence linking breastfeeding with positive health outcomes, a relatively low proportion of African-American women nurse their babies. The purpose of this project is to address the critical need for breastfeeding education within the African-American community through the development of a network of community lactation educators in three pilot communities--Atlanta, Baltimore, and Chicago. This grant will provide partial support for Phase I of this three-phase initiative. The overarching goal of the entire initiative is to promote breastfeeding among African-American women in the three selected pilot cities with the ultimate aim of replicating the program in other cities. In Phase I, an assessment will be conducted to help determine the best use of technology (i.e., computers and the Internet) in the health education program. Deliverables of Phase I will include the results of the assessment. Phase I will be considered successful if it results in sufficient information regarding potential uses of technology to move ahead with Phases II and III.
