The Foundation's program, Allies Against Asthma: A Program to Combine Clinical and Public Health Approaches to Chronic Illness, was designed to support community-based coalitions aimed at improving efforts to control pediatric asthma. The King County Asthma Forum focuses on asthma in children living in Central and South Seattle, Washington, and Southwest King County. The hospitalization rate for children with asthma in this area is almost double that of the rest of the county. This grant supports targeted activities in intensive intervention neighborhoods which include recruiting and training "Asthma Champions"--clinicians who will lead team efforts to incorporate improved asthma management practices into clinic operations. Participating clinics will create an Asthma Registry to track clinical care and help insure children receive care that complies with national asthma guidelines. A group of experts, "Team Asthma," will be available to schools to provide advice regarding school policies, conduct environmental assessments, and offer student and parent education. In addition, patient education is to be offered by community health workers, public health nurses, and pharmacists in homes, clinics, and community settings. Training and education will be available to day care providers. The coalition will also standardize referral protocols, asthma action plans, and educational resources across all systems.
