Tracking state policies that encourage active living

With new efforts to develop activity-friendly communities and programs occurring across the country, there is a growing need for consistent tracking of state-level policies and regulations that will facilitate or impede active living. The purpose of this project is to collect and analyze information on state and state-governed local policies that promote walking and biking for physical activity. Project deliverables will include a comparative matrix of core state policies, a series of case studies and a proposal to develop a long-term tracking system to monitor the progress of state and local policies in achieving their physical activity objectives, and to provide a framework for in-depth technical assistance to state legislatures and communities in designing and implementing such policies. This project will be considered successful if it is able to identify 10-15 key state level policies that encourage active living, and if a viable process is proposed for tracking and monitoring the policies across the states.
