Development of an updated clinical preventive services guide for employers, consumers, and benefits managers

Despite the fact that preventable illness constitutes approximately 50 percent of the burden of illness and its associated costs in the U.S., and 8 of the 9 leading causes of death are preventable, a 1997 survey of employer-sponsored health plans found that coverage of preventive services was less than 50 percent for some services, including smoking cessation services and various health behavior counseling services. Appropriate immunization, prenatal care, screening, and behavioral counseling can reduce disability, extend the span of healthy life, and lower unnecessary losses in worker productivity. Delivery of these clinical preventive services and more are an important component of establishing and maintaining personal health and well-being, yet many of these services are often left uncovered by employer-sponsored health insurance and underutilized by employees. This grant provides support to produce a revised electronic translation of the Guide to Clinical Preventive Services suited for use by corporate benefits managers. The Employer's Guide to Clinical Preventive Services (Revised Edition) will include translations of the present guidelines for clinical preventive services along with updates and added guidelines, and will make the business case and strategies for incorporating preventive services coverage and present communication strategies regarding the benefits of preventive services.
