Social connectedness and isolation affect health in many ways; yet researchers, human services professionals, and policy makers have not adequately addressed them as important remediable health determinants. This grant will support the development of two distinct but collaborative working groups -- one to study, test, and advocate for appropriate interventions and policies intended to enhance health through strategies that improve social connectedness and reduce social isolation; and one to focus on the etiology and mechanisms by which social connectedness and isolation interact with other social determinants to affect health. During this planning phase, the right collaborative structures, leaders, and members to carry out these activities, as well as options for the approaches to implementation, will be identified.
