Partnerships between Smart Growth Communities and physical activity supporters continue to develop. To ensure that these partnerships remain viable and increase community funds available to support their activities, improved knowledge, organization, and coordination is necessary. In 1999, the Funders Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities was formed to increase coordination of the non-profit organizations and foundations concerned with suburban sprawl and urban disinvestment. This grant will make RWJF a member of that network and ensure that physical activity and active living environments are involved in these projects. This grant will support programmatic efforts of the Funders Network and will ensure that issues of health are considered in all aspects of the Networks' work, especially those related to community foundations. Community foundations are particularly important for providing matching funds for the RWJF Active Living National Initiative. This project will be considered successful if it results in the development of at least one health-related smart growth translation paper and in educating at least 20 community foundations about the intersection between physical activity, community design and health.
